Sabarimala Temple

Sabarimala is one of the most famous temples in India. This temple is located at a height of 1565 ft above the sea level , in the middle of dense forest area. Lord Shastha (Sastha) is worshipped here. Shastha was born as a result of the merging between the powers of lord Vishnu and lord Siva. Every year about 50 million devotees are visiting this sacred place.Women between the age of 10 and 50 are not allowed to visit here.This temple is open only during the days of “Mandalapooja”, at the time of “Makara Sankranti” and during the first six days of malayalam months.


 


Tali Temple – Shiva Temple

The Tali temple located in Kozhikode was constructed during the reign of Swamy Thirumulpad, the Zamorin, within his palace complex in the 14th century. It is under the Trusteeship of the Zamorin of Calicut. Tali temple is dedicated to lord Shiva.

It is believed that the Jyothirlingam in the sanctum – Sanctorum of the Temple was installed by Sri. Parasurama. The sanctum-sanctorum has a posture of Umamaheswara. (Uma is goddess Parvathy and Maheswaran is Lord Shiva). The sanctum-sanctorum is two storied and in the shape of a chariot which is decorated with mural paintings on the walls, the sculptures in granite of lord Siva’s retinue, and birds and animals, mentioned in puranas.


 


Guruvayoor

Location: Guruvayoor is located about 29 km West of Thrissur.

Kerala is blessed with a large number of pilgrim centres, Among that, Guruvayoor is one of the most famous and sacred place. The main attraction of Guruvayoor is the Sree Krishna temple. It is believed that, this temple is created by the Guru, the preceptor of Gods, and vayu, who is considered as the god of winds. The main nada at east is the main entrance to the shrine.

The main attraction of this temple is the 33.5 metres high gold plated Dwajasthambam( similar to the flag-post), which is situated within the Chuttambalam. There is also a pillar of lamps called Dipastambham which is 7 m high. It has got 13 circular receptacles which provide a truly attractive spectacle when lit.The square Sreekovil is the sacred sanctum sanctorum of the temple houses the main deity.

Within the temple there are various statues and images of other lords like Edathedattu Bhagavathy ,Kavil Ganapathy, Lord Ayyappa etc. Non- Hindus are not allowed inside the temple.


 


Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple

This is a very famous temple in Kerala. Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple is renowned for its rich wealth storage. This temple is of lord Vishnu. This temple is built using the style of both Kerala and Dravidian culture and architectures. The various numbers of traditional old buildings and the large pond near by the temple are the main attraction of this place. .


 


Vaikom Temple

Vaikom Mahadeva temple is situated in Vaikom, in kottayam district. This is a siva temple.This is one of the few temples in Kerala, which is held in reverence by both vaishnavites as well as shaivaites.

The lord siva in Vaikom temple is fondly called as “Vaikkathappan”.Vaikom temple is also famous for Vaikkathashtami.This is one of the famous festival which is held in the month of november and december.The date of Vaikom Ashtami is determined by the malayalam calender.


 


Ettumanoor Mahadevar Temple

Ettumanoor Mahadeva temple is situated in Ettumanoor in kottayam district. It is believed that Pandavas and sage Vyasa had worshipped in this ancient temple. In this temple, we could see “dravidian mural painitings” on the walls, inside and outside of its main entrance.Inside the temple, there is a golden flag staff.Ettumanoor temple is famous for its “Arattu festival” which is celebrated on “Thiruvathira” day that comes in february-march every year.


 


Attukal Bhagavathy temple

Attukal Bhagavathy temple is located near the very famous Padmanabha Swamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. This temple is dedicated to goddess Parvathi, wife of lord Siva. As we all know, Attukal temple is famous for its “Attukal Pongala”.Thousands of women from all parts of Kerala participate in this great event every year.


 


Ambalapuzha Sree Krishna Temple

Lord Krishna is worshipped as “Unni Krishna ” as his child form in this temple. Ambalappuzha Sreekrishna temple is built in early 17th century. This temple is famous for its “Palpayasam” served as an offering. It is believed that deity from Guruvayoor temple was brought here to safeguard it from Tipu Sultha’s raid.


 


Thirunelli Temple

This ancient thirunelli Maha Vishnu temple is located near Brahmagiri in Wayanad district at a height of 900 ft. It is believed that, in this Vishnu temple, the idol was installed by Brahma. Thousands of pilgrims are visiting this temple every year and are immersing themselves in “Papanashini”, the mountain stream in order to cleanse themselves from all the sins and thus to start a new life.


 


Vadakkunnathan Temple

Vadakkunnathan temple is located in Thrissur district, which is well known as a temple town. This temple stands in 9 acres of land which is surrounded with fortified walls having towered entrances on 4 sides. There are three shrines, one to lord Siva, one to lord Rama and the last one to Shankaranarayana. The very famous “Thrissur Pooram” is held in the large area around the temple.


 


Chottanikkara Temple

The deity in chottanikkara temple is “Bhagavathi” in the form of a divine mother who is taking care of her children who are suffering from various ailments, especially mental illness. A large number of mentally suffering people are brought here and most of them are getting cured too. As devi is worshipped along with lord Vishnu, the devotees address them together as “Lakshminarayana”.


 


Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple

This temple is loacted in Pathanamthita district. This is one of the most revered temples in Kerala. This is one of the “Divya Desams” dedicated to lord Vishnu. This Parthasarathy temple is located on the sides of Pampa river.
